Promoting Education and Community Through the Theater Arts
                                FILLING A VACUUM

School and Community TheaterHub grew out of one parent’s question: "How can I find out about shows at other schools?" As it turns out, others want to know too.

School theater programs, unlike other well-known extra-curricular programs, have tended to go it alone in their regions. How much better it would be for the students if there were some cross-pollination among production staff and among student peers.

TheaterHub’s public face is its seasonal theater calendar. It is especially created to encourage student travel to other productions with the expectation that peers will inspire one another. Its value to student learning is incalculable. And the larger community benefits from having access to this unique theater resource.

Since its beginning in 2004, coverage has expanded from one county in its first manifestation to the eight counties of south central Pennsylvania, and from high schools exclusively to include middle schools, colleges and community theaters. Combined, these represent approximately 130 programs. The goal is comprehensive regional coverage of education and community-focused theater because amateurs of all stripes merit the opportunity to be recognized for their good will.

In addition to its calendars TheaterHub provides an extensive collection of arts-related information with an education and community focus.

School and Community TheaterHub is a non-commercial collaborative effort among production staff and other arts boosters.

SCOPE OF SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY THEATERHUB
                                • Promotes education and community ties through the theater arts,
                                • Maintains the most comprehensive calendar of school, college and community theater productions in south central Pennsylvania (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties), and
                                • Offers an extensive listing of everything theatrical in the region, highlighting those with youth education /production opportunities.

                                MISSION:

To promote liberal arts education and community ties through the promotion of the theater
                                        arts.

                                CONCEPT:

                                •  TheaterHub is an organization of school staff, arts professionals, and dedicated volunteers committed to the advancement of the arts in the schools and community with a special emphasis on the theater arts.  We strive to highlight the arts, to build community, and to promote professional development. These in turn improve the quality of the learning experience.
                                •  TheaterHub addresses the issue that educational theater programs are normally treated as an extracurricular activity but unlike sports leagues in competition, theater arts groups are independent of one another and isolated in their communities. Few mechanisms exist to bring school programs together with other school programs or to encourage a broad community following.
                                •  The fourth “R,” that of the arts, merits greater recognition in a liberal arts curriculum.  The future of the arts in our society rests largely on the investment our schools make in instilling an appreciation of the arts in the young.  It is TheaterHub’s mission to enhance education through interscholastic theater arts programming and rapport building and to encourage increased opportunities for participation of all youth.
